Help Available with Food Stamps
In an effort to help our guests
stretch their limited resources a little further, the staff at our Emergency
Food Pantry have begun to identify people who qualify for food stamps and assist
them with applying for this mainstream resource. Staff can now help people
complete the application and work through the process.
The staff have received training on food stamps and the application process
from Jim Skroka from the Valley Opportunity Council and from Sara Ovenden of
Project Bread.
Since beginning this service in April, the staff have already
booked over 78 appointments to assist people.
To further develop our capacity and ability to administer this new service, our pantry is participating in a new project facilitated by Project Bread with the Department of Transitional Assistance, in conjunction with the Springfield School Department and other community organizations. This networking of organizations will create food stamp application resource centers to efficiently and effectively help people access this much needed assistance.
